National law Journal The number of death penalty sentences in the U.S. has dropped to the lowest point since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976, according to a new report from the Death Penalty Information Center. Seventy-eight capital punishment verdicts were handed down this year compared to 112 last year. In related findings, a Gallup poll done this year found that 61 percent of Americans approve of the death penalty -- the lowest rating since 1972.
SIDEBAR:The U.S. should not be in the business of killing people. There is a good chance that of the 78 people given the death sentence this year 7 to 10 of them are innocent. Most people on death roll are poor black people who could not afford a good lawyer. Like the poor schwarz above, who was electrocuted, and later found Innocent. What Do You Have To Prove? There are two things you have to prove to be true in order to win a case of defamation of character in the court of law. First of all, you have to prove without a doubt that what was said or written about you is not true. Once you have proved that the statement is, in fact, false you have to prove that the other person said the false statement with the intent of causing you some form of harm.
